This sea is a salt lake located between Jordan and Israel. Located to 395 meters below sea level has a salinity six times higher than that of the oceans, which is why there is no life in its waters, with the exception of several species of microorganisms. Oval and its eastern and western shores are rugged highlands. Receives numerous tributaries, several temporary, but the most important is the Jordan River, which comes from the north. The sea has no outlet and only removes excess evaporation of water. From the economic point of view is important because it contains large amounts of salts of calcium, sodium, magnesium and potassium, which are useful for the production of chemicals.
Has a length of 90 kilometers from north to south, a width of between 5 and 16 km, and an area of 1,049 square kilometers.
The Essenes wrote the famous Dead Sea Scrolls, which were found in the northwestern shore of the sea. The cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were also established on its banks.
The volume of water has declined over the last 10,000 years, because evaporation is rapid due to high desert temperatures, which eliminate water, and precipitation are not sufficient to replace it.
