The goal of reaching the East Asian countries, famous for its spices and gold, through a more direct route, did Christopher Columbus think that the roundness of the earth could reach the East by sailing West. With an expedition of three skulls (La Santa Maria, La Pinta and La Niña), supported financially by the Crown of Castile, and a crew of convicts, broke the August 3, 1942 the port of Palos. After a long trip, which supplies became scarce and hopes faded among the crew, the October 12, 1942 arrived on the island of San Salvador, called by the natives Guanahani, in the archipelago of the Bahamas, Bahamas islands.
The discovery of America to Spain meant sudden wealth because the precious metals from the new land but, in turn, caused the collapse of the great empires of the New Continent.

After the first voyage, Columbus sailed three times and came back sick from the last expedition. By then died Queen Isabella, the great protector, precipitating an end. The great navigator died in Valladolid on May 20, 1506.
