The French Revolution, which erupted in 1789, marked the collapse of absolute monarchy and the introduction of democratic republics in Europe. For historians, this revolution is closed with the Modern and Contemporary begins, which continues today. This process of change began when King Louis XVI, overwhelmed by the debts of the State, the States-General convened, consisting of the nobility, the clergy and the bourgeoisie. This institution of feudal origin, by the action of the bourgeoisie and sectors of the Church, became the General Assembly, a Republican organization that subsequently became the Constituent Assembly. In 1791, the Assembly established a constitutional monarchy, which fell when Louis XVI was beheaded and power took over the Convention.

What was the Bastille?

On July 14, 1789 the people of Paris took the Bastille, a fortress that was used as a prison. This episode was considered a symbol of the collapse of the old regime, ie the absolute monarchy.

Ordered revolutionaries guillotined Louis XVI and his wife Marie Antoinette when they discovered that the royal couple corresponded with the emigrant nobles. They conspired against the Revolution trying to convince foreign kings to invade France to restore the monarchy.
