One of the largest amphitheaters of ancient Rome was the Coliseum. Its construction began in the year 74, at the initiative of Emperor Vespasian, and completed in the year 80, under the rule of Tito. His elliptical and a perimeter of 540 meters. It was divided into four levels: first, decorated with arches and pillars, the second, and half-Ionic, the third, and half-Corinthian, and the fourth, with walls without arches. The exterior of the amphitheater was travertine stone, the interior concrete of lime and sand, and the seats were of marble. The Colosseum could hold 50,000 spectators sitting, attending shows fights between gladiators and wild animals hunting other aggressive and cruel games. It is said that for centuries men died there and thousands of animals brought to the amusement of the spectators. It was also used for the martyrdom of Christians.
