Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is considered the most important writer of the German language and one of the greatest exponents of Romanticism. Born in Frankfurt am Main in August 1749. His father, a noble officer, sent him to the prestigious University of Leipzig to study law. But the young Goethe was amazed at the climate of literary renewal that lived in that German city. Returning to Frankfurt reluctantly began practicing lawyers, as conceived all kinds of ideas and projects. His first work was the play Götz von Berlichingen, published in 1773. But gained notoriety with the publication of The Sorrows of Young Werther, the work of 1774. This was instrumental in the emergence of Sturm und Drang (storm and momentum), a pre-Romantic movement joined by numerous authors. In 1774 he was invited by the Duke of Weimar to join his court. The writer happened there most of the rest of his life. Had a child with Christiane Vulpius. He died in March 1832.
