Washington was one of the main heroes of the independence of the United States, and the first president of that country. Born in 1732 in Bridges Creek, Virginia, a family fortune. In 1752 he joined the colonial militia under the command of six companies fought against the French during the Seven Years' War. After the United States declared its independence in 1776, Washington commanded the Patriot forces. Defeated the British at the battles of Trenton (1776), Princeton (1777) and Yorktown (1781). Finally, by the Treaty of Versailles (1783) recognized the independence of the United States. He was elected president of his country in 1788 and took office in April 1789. Reelected in 1792, completed his second term, but declined to pursue a third term, and retired to his farm in Mount Vernon, where he died in December 1799.
